If you search or surf the web, more than likely cookies are being dropped on your computer which allow advertisers to market to you based on your online behavior. This form of marketing is called behavioral targeting and is VERY effective at getting your message out to an audience that fits your "perfect client" mold.
But it is also annoying to online consumers who are aware that they are being targeted. My personal thought is that people are a little turned off by the Big Brotherish feel this form of advertising gives off. I also think there is a misconception of how much information is being shared whereas they feel the advertiser knows THEM personally and not just a pattern in search/surf which triggers the behavioral targeting.

Recently, I have been really focused on writing about social media and the power it has for Baltimore and Washington DC area business owners. It seems that not a day goes by where I do not read or get sent articles about its impact on SMB's. According to Comscore, the company that keeps tally on what website receives more traffic than others, it seems Facebook just surpassed Yahoo in unique monthly visitors.

Google's Matt Cutts now says that social media IS taken into consideration by Google's search engine rankings where JUST 7 months ago he said it did not.
