Social Media Domination: What Companies Lead the Pack?

Social media is a fairly new concept, but in just the few years since the creation of social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and more, the internet has become dominated by the concept of communication and dialog via the internet and social networks.

By far, Facebook is the unquestionable leader in social media, garnering over 955 million users and the prestige of being the leading site for 125 countries in the world. It has forced other national social media leaders out of the #1 spot in countries like Brazil and India where Orkut was the leading media platform until recently. The same could be said of the Netherlands’ Hyves which reached 10 million users in its heyday in 2010 and Japan’s Mixi, which had over 80% of the social media market until it was toppled by the social networking giant.

Tying for a far distant second place is Twitter, LinkedIn and Badoo. Twitter has an estimated 500 million users and holds the #2 spot in countries like the US and the UK. However, social media slash dating site Badoo brings in the second place tie for Brazil and Denmark where users seem to prefer looking for a spouse rather than Tweeting with friends. Bringing in the third tie on the #2 social media spot is LinkedIn which boasts 175 million users and holds the second spot in countries like Australia, Canada and Finland where building business connections holds the bright spot.

According to a survey conducted by comScore, internet users spend an estimated 1 out of every 5 minutes on social media and networking sites. In the few short years since their conception, social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have dominated and that domination seems to have a clear and unhindered future ahead for the companies as more users get on the social media bandwagon.
