Negative Search Engine Optimization Is Bad, OK?

We cannot neglect the search engines in any of our online marketing efforts. Search engines have become much more than merely the searching tools for users. Now they have become the foundations on which businesses are built. Also, remember I’m not exaggerating their importance here. In fact, most of the businesses are already aware of it and have been for quite some time. No wonder, it has given birth to the multi-million dollar industry of search engine optimization.

If you start thinking search engine optimization is old news, and everybody knows that, then here comes the shocker. You may know that search engine optimization can do wonders for any business, but what you may not know is that search engine optimization can also completely ruin a business and the most annoying part is that all of this happens without the knowledge of the site owner. Did I lose you?  I’m talking about negative search engine optimization.

It’s not rocket science to understand negative search engine optimization. Anybody who is familiar with the working of the search engines must be familiar with search engine penalties and bans. The search engines impose penalties on sites which use illegitimate means to rank well in the search engine results.  Now twist this strategy a bit.  If we use the same so-called illegitimate means on the website of a competitor, to make it look bad to the search engines, then it can affect their website ranking.

While, at the moment, negative search engine optimization does not look like a serious problem, because it is still in its beginning stages, but once fully developed it can pose a serious problem to users, businesses and the search engines alike and that’s why search engines are required to take immediate steps to stop it right now.  Pretty scary stuff, right?
