All across the Internet, companies are stating Google’s Panda update is negatively affecting their search engine optimization campaigns, or in other words, causing their websites to rank poorly on the search engine results page. Let’s take a step back first to understand what the Panda update is all about…
According to Ryan Jones, a search engine optimization consultant for Team Detroit, Google’s Panda update is about “duplicate content and usefulness.” What does duplicate content look like? Ryan gives a classic example of a company that was hit by Panda here. See how their content matches exactly with the site’s content below it? In a nutshell, when you copy another company’s content, Google doesn’t like it, and it surely doesn’t help your site’s organic rankings online.
You Have to Stand Out
So how can your company avoid getting smashed by Panda? You need to have unique and valuable content on your site. Copying information from other sites might be an easy task, but how does it make your business stand out? When a consumer sees the same content from your site and a competitor’s site, why would they choose you or your competitor?
The Fact Surrounding Panda
Ryan makes another great point in his commentary; Panda only affects 11 and 12% of search queries, which means the majority of websites’ rankings aren’t influenced by Panda whatsoever. It all goes back to the utility theme with Google. Keep in mind Google’s audience is the end user, the consumer looking to research online. Google’s mission is to give the best search results to the consumer and if your site isn’t original with fresh content, then your site won’t be found on the Internet. Like your basic revenue goals, just because you’re up in sales doesn’t mean you should stop there and assume all is well. Keep pushing because the finish line is pretty distant.
