Demystifying Facebooks People Are Talking About This Metric

Attention Facebook advertising companies: people are talking about this.  What’s this?  Actually, that’s the name of Facebook’s latest metric: “People Are Talking About This.”  When you go to your Facebook business page, you will see this metric just below your likes on the left-hand side of the page like this:

Oh no, you may be thinking.  Not another metric to track for my Facebook advertising efforts!  Though this is correct, the “People Are Talking About This” metric is beneficial to your business because it enables you to get a closer look at the activity and buzz generated from your Facebook company page, specifically over the past seven days.  What type of activity is included in the metric?  Here’s the list:

  1. Liking a Page
  2. Posting to a Page’s Wall
  3. Liking, commenting on or sharing a Page post (or other content on a page, like photos, videos or albums)
  4. Answering a question posted
  5. RSVPing to an event
  6. Mentioning a Page in a post
  7. Phototagging a Page
  8. Liking or sharing a check-in deal
  9. Checking in at a Place

Benefits to Your Business: This metric will be featured in your Facebook page analytics (Insights).  The reporting will list each post you’ve made to your Facebook page along with the engagement details including reach and engaged users, so you can be aware of which posts were the most effective for your fan base.  When asked about the metric from a business perspective, a Facebook spokesperson stated,

The goal of Pages Insights for Page admins is to understand what drives that number and how they can best engage their advocates, so that they can get a sense of how to optimize their Page content to increase the people they’re reaching with their messages. Which means that no matter the size of your Page’s audience, you can really get a good sense for which posts spread and get shared with others” (Finn).

With the new “People Are Talking About This” metric, hopefully you can build a stronger community on Facebook.
